A Gentle, Healing Approach for Dementia Care
Doll therapy is a powerful, non-pharmacological tool used to reduce stress, agitation and anxiety in individuals living with dementia. At The Grand Baby Project, we approach doll therapy not as play, but as a therapeutic activity grounded in empathy, trauma-informed care and dignity.

Many people living with dementia — particularly in moderate to advanced stages — experience a strong emotional response when introduced to a soft, lifelike doll. For some, it awakens nurturing instincts or memories of parenthood. For others, it simply provides comfort and companionship in moments of confusion or loneliness.
WHY IT WORKS?
01
Reduces anxiety, restlessness and sundowning
Therapeutic dolls offer a gentle sense of comfort and companionship, which can significantly ease anxiety and agitation — especially during late-day confusion known as “sundowning,” a common symptom in later stages of dementia. The presence of a doll can provide grounding, helping individuals feel calmer and more secure.
02
Provides a calming, repetitive sensory experience
The soft texture and weight of a therapeutic doll can create a soothing sensory rhythm. Holding, rocking, or simply keeping the doll nearby offers repetitive comfort — a natural way to self-soothe and regulate emotions without words.
03
Helps reduce reliance on medications for behavioral symptoms
When introduced thoughtfully, doll therapy can serve as an effective non-pharmacological alternative to manage difficult behaviors. This can reduce the need for antipsychotic or sedative medications often used to control agitation, leading to more natural and peaceful care.
04
Reconnects individuals with a sense of purpose and identity
Many individuals instinctively begin to care for the doll — holding it, cradling it, talking to it — which can reignite feelings of purpose, especially for those who once raised children or worked in nurturing roles. It taps into long-held identities and restores a sense of meaning.
05
Promotes non-verbal expression and emotional regulation
For individuals who struggle with verbal communication, therapeutic dolls become a powerful emotional outlet. The act of caring for the doll allows them to express love, concern, and tenderness in ways they may no longer be able to verbalize — helping reduce internal frustration and emotional distress.
How We Do It Differently

At The Grand Baby Project, we believe that therapeutic care begins with dignity, consent, and compassion. That’s why every doll we provide is introduced with care, respect and a deep understanding of the emotional and cultural needs of those living with dementia. Our trauma-informed approach ensures that the use of doll therapy is always meaningful — never forced or misunderstood.

Ongoing monitoring and support after introduction
We equip caregivers with the right language, timing and techniques to introduce the doll in a calm, non-intrusive way. This includes identifying readiness, respecting personal boundaries and knowing when to step back.
We never assume that doll therapy is right for every individual. Instead, we observe natural responses and offer dolls in a way that allows the person to engage — or not — on their own terms. Consent and autonomy remain at the center of the process.
We recognize that every person carries a unique history. Our dolls, training and approach are mindful of cultural backgrounds, gender identity, past traumas and personal preferences. We help caregivers match the doll’s appearance and energy with the person’s comfort level and life story.
Introducing the doll is just the beginning. We guide caregivers in observing emotional cues, adjusting usage and responding to any changes over time — ensuring the experience remains supportive and never causes distress.
It’s not about giving someone a doll. It’s about giving them back a piece of themselves — with care, permission, and love.
